Then I replied to them, “The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build . . .” (Nehemiah 2:20, ESV)
A few years back my family and I took a trip to the beach. When we arrived, we noticed there was a boat that was washed up on the shore and stuck in the sand. We are not exactly sure how it got there. But one thing we knew for sure was it was not where it was supposed to be.
How did it get there? It had drifted!
There are many people like that boat. They find themselves having drifted to a place they never intended to be. Maybe it is their work, their marriage, or their relationship with God. They are not sure how they got where they are and now find themselves stuck.
When we let life take us where life will take us, it will not end well. We rarely drift anywhere good. But that is what most people do. They allow themselves to drift because they are unaware, distracted, overwhelmed, or deceived. They don’t take the time to chart the course or seek direction from the Navigator of all navigators. There are no plans or goals. There is no aim or direction.
The waves of life will take us where they will when we do not have a course to follow. Even if we were to arrive at a destination of prosperity, we would not recognize that we have reached the destination because we never determined the finish.
Today is the day to chart the course. Our navigator is God. Seek him to determine the destination and chart the course to follow.
Reflection
- Do you see yourself drifting or charting a course?
- How do you keep yourself from drifting?
Prayer
Lord, too often I am wandering aimlessly. I easily lose my course and my direction. I drift to places I never thought I would end up and I am taken captive by the storms of life. Be my map, my GPS, and my guide. Be the wind in my sails. Take me to the places you would have me go. Amen.
