In Judah it was said, “The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.” (Nehemiah 4:10, ESV)
There comes a time when you get discouraged. There is a time when you begin to doubt. That project that you started with great hope begins to lose momentum. The success you once experienced does not come as easy.
The people of Jerusalem had made such great progress on the walls, but the initial enthusiasm had worn off. They were being threatened by their enemies. The sheer scope of the work had become overwhelming. It was all too much! They felt as if they were engaged in a losing proposition.
When these moments come, we might feel like giving up. But how do we respond to the challenge? How do we find the energy, strength, and determination to push through?
Know your why
Go back to why you first began. Remember the reason for doing what you are doing. And if you don’t have a big enough reason for what you are doing, then maybe it isn’t what you should be doing. But let’s make the assumption you are pursuing a worthy cause. Write down the benefit of your project for yourself, for others, and for God’s kingdom.
Guard your heart, mind, and body
It is so easy to get wrapped up in our work that we fail to take care of ourselves. We work long hours and fail to take time for things like sleep, devotions, and exercise. When we get discouraged, we fail to take care of ourselves. But these are the times we need to care for ourselves the most.
Focus on progress
Focus on the next step rather than the finish line. Celebrate the small wins. You may not be making the progress you hoped to make, but if you are making progress, that is a good thing. When you keep moving forward, you can look back, and you will be amazed how far you have come. We tend to focus on the progress we make on a given day rather than progress in a month, in a year, or over five years. Small steps today will lead to big steps over time.
Know you can’t fail with God
If God is on your side, you can’t go wrong. He will prosper your way. It may not work out in the way that you intend, but he will bring you to where you need to be. Sometimes our current difficult season is preparing us for the next season of our life. The challenging experiences face today are building us up for future callings. God knows what he is doing, and when you set your sights on him, he will give you the strength and determination you need.
Refection
- Where have you been disappointed in the progress of your work?
- What are the ways you overcome disappointment?
Prayer
Lord, my strength often fails and I grow discouraged in my work and calling. I need your help. Renew my strength and zeal. Give me courage and passion. Restore my joy to live fully alive for you. Amen.
