“having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints…” (Ephesians 1:18, ESV)
Greater vision! In this prayer, the Apostle Paul prays for the eyes of our hearts to be enlightened. It is that we would be more perceptive to God’s work and God’s way. God is actively working and moving. But we easily miss it.
We grow impatient when we fail to discern God’s presence. We want him to show up. We want him to do what we want him to do. We get so focused on what we want that we miss what he wants. We have preconceived notions about what he should do, that we miss what he is already doing.
Waiting on God is about discerning. It is about seeing in this moment what God wants us to see. Waiting on God may be recognizing that God is leading us in a different direction. It may be recognizing that we already have in our possession more than we realize. It may be recognizing that what we want is not all that great.
We live trusting that “not yet” or “never” is the right answer. We may not see it or understand it. So we ask that God would enlighten us. And often that enlightenment is that you see you are more blessed than you ever realize.
Reflection
- Have you-you ever missed recognizing current blessings because you were blinded by hope or anticipation of future blessings?
- What does it mean to have the eyes of your heart opened?
Prayer
Lord, you are good. You are present in my life in ways that I am not aware. I grow impatient, and I desire for you to accomplish more. But I miss what you are already doing. I want you to take me to the places I want to go. But you are filled with wisdom, and you know better than I could ever know. Give me a greater discernment of your presence and what you are doing at the moment. Amen.
