There are three basic relationships in life. These three relationships are:
- A relationship with God
- A relationship with self
- A relationship with others
This is the Trinity of relationships. The first relationship is the relationship we have with God. It is said that Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship. It all starts with a relationship with God. It is Jesus who meets us where we are at so that we could relate to God and know God. We all relate to God in some way or fashion. The question is what that fashion is.
All the other relationships are informed by the relationship you have with God. If you have a good relationship with God, you will tend to have good relationships with self and others. If you have a difficult relationship with God, you will tend to have a difficult relationship with others.
When we experience grace in our relationship with God, we will tend to offer grace to others. When we perceive God as a demanding authoritarian, we will tend to pile guilt on ourselves and unrealistic expectations upon others.
Every problem in life is ultimately a God problem. If something is not right in a relationship in life, there is a good chance that something is not right in your relationship with God. The first key to fruitful relationships in life is to have an abiding relationship with God.
Reflection
- How do you relate to God?
- How is your relationship with God reflected through your other relationships in life?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for meeting me where I am at. Thank you for giving me Jesus so that I can know you and live in relationship with you. May your love for me form the basis for how I relate to every person in this life. Help me to establish meaningful and healthy relationships with others. Amen.
