“Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” (Psalm 27:14, ESV)
The right person. The right plan. The right time. God has a way of bringing these together. You can have the right plan but the wrong person. You can have the right person and the right plan, and it can still be the wrong time.
I have hit all three of these walls at one time or another. There have been times where I thought I was the right person, but God had chosen someone else. There are times when I was the right person, but I pursued my plans rather than God’s plans. And there have been times when I was the right person and had the right plan, but I had to wait for God’s time.
It seems like the will I hit up against the most is the “right time.” Patience is a quality that is lost on many of us. We are not good at waiting. We want God to open the door yesterday. I know I am stubborn and filled with pride. When things are not happening fast enough, I will tend to make things happen. I try to push through doors God has not yet opened. And it does not go well.
Can you relate? You want to arrive at the destination before taking the journey. But there are good reasons to wait on the Lord. We will look at some of those reasons more next week. In the meantime, consider those places in your life where you to to get out ahead of God. Also, consider the things that help to teach you patience.
Reflection
- Where do you try to get ahead of God?
- How do you teach yourself patience?
Prayer
Lord, you are eternal. Time is in your hands. You created the days and nights. You established seasons. I get so impatient. I want you to open doors of opportunity before the right time. Help me to slow down to savor each moment, to enjoy what I have now and not be distracted by what is not yet. Amen.
