“All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.” (1 Peter 1:24–25, ESV)
It has been said that a Bible that is worn out is the sign of a person who is not. We experience the Word of God through the pages of Scriptures. The Scripture builds us up, it encourages us, it convicts us, it points us towards the path of salvation. It points us to Jesus. Is is all about Jesus. It is Jesus!
The Bible is an amazing book. It is more than a book. The Greek word is Biblios. It is translated library. It is 66 books, 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. It has 40 different authors from three different continents who span over 2,000 years. It also has portions written in three different languages, and it is estimated to have been translated into 2,500 languages. There is no other book like it.
It is eternal. Peter says this Word remains forever. It has stood the test of time. It was here long before any of us, and it will be here long after we are gone from this earth. It was the Word of God that spoke creation into existence. It will be the Word of God that will speak your eternal reward.
It is good news. It is grace. It is forgiveness. It is God for us. It empowers us to live abundantly in this life and eternally in the life to come.
God does not intend for it to stay on a book shelf. Nor does he desire for the Word to stay in a book. He gives us this Word to take from the pages of Scripture to our eyes/ears to our mind to our heart and to our hands/feet/mouth. In other words, God gives us the Scripture so that it will dwell within us and that we might live it out.
Moses says this word is your life (Deuteronomy 32:47). Peter says, “Lord to whom shall we go, for you have the words of eternal life?” (John 6:68)
Reflection
- Do you have a daily Bible Reading Plan? How do you experience God’s Word consistently?
- How has God’s Word spoken to you today?
Prayer
Thank you Lord for your Word. Thank you for the good news of the Gospel. Help me to be disciplined to experience your Word each day. Help me to learn it, to internalize it, and to live it out. Use your word to convict me where I need conviction and to encourage me where I need encouragement. Amen.
