Yesterday, we discussed the complexity of suffering. There are no easy answers. To add to the complexity, we might recognize there are many different types of suffering. Consider this list of 13 different types. It’s not comprehensive.
- Endemic – it is part of the human condition.
- Demonic – spiritual warfare is real.
- Victim – when you are wronged.
- Collective – an example would be a national tragedy.
- Disciplinary – a child who is corrected by parents.
- Persecution – many Christians in this world suffer because of their confession of faith.
- Empathetic – when you love someone so much, you hurt when they hurt.
- Testimonial – when people ridicule you because the Savior you love.
- Providential – when God’s plans are bigger than you can see or recognize.
- Mysterious – sometimes there are no answers.
- Punishment – you commit the crime, you do the time.
- Consequential – the result of poor decisions.
- Apocalyptic – in these last time there will be wars and rumors of wars. Much suffering!
Suffering is not surprising because it can affect us in so many different ways. Do not be surprised when it comes your way. Understanding the cause of our suffering may help us better endure. But there needs to be more. Tomorrow, I will share some godly responses to endure suffering.
Reflection
- Can you identify additional reasons why we suffer?
- What gives you the courage to endure suffering?
Prayer
Jesus, it is good to know that we are not alone in suffering. You are with us, and you have given us the faithful witnesses of the past to give us hope and encouragement to endure. We may not always have the answers, so help us to trust in your mercy. Amen.
