The seven deadly sins are life struggles and challenges that are at the root of the hardships and struggles we face in life. If we are to overcome and experience the abundant life that Jesus desires for us then we must overcome these sins.
Opposite the seven deadly sins are seven virtues. For every sin there is a virtue that lies in contrast. It is the seven virtues we strive to live out.
While we will not find the seven deadly sins listed as such in the Bible, they are woven throughout the context. Theologians and scholars have identified these persistent struggles throughout history. The seven deadly sins include:
- Pride (humility)
- Envy (contentment)
- Wrath (meekness)
- Sloth (obedience)
- Greed (generosity)
- Gluttony (temperance)
- Lust (chastity)
During the next couple of weeks we will be taking a look at each one of these sins of pride and its contrasting virtue. Make sure to sign up for our weekly eDevotion

Joan says
Why are some sins consider “deadly”. I was always taught a sin is a sin no matter if it is murder or lying.
Phil says
Joan, thanks for the question. Think of the 7 Deadly Sins as categories of sin. In many ways all the sins that are common to humans come back to these 7 deadly sins. The sin of murder is often attached to things like pride and envy. The 7 Deadly Sins are foundational struggles that we wrestle with.
