Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. (Psalm 145:3, ESV)
Martin Luther did not see God as helpful. He saw God as vindictive and vengeful. He lived in constant fear of God. He did not see God’s love, only God’s anger.
What he missed were God’s grace and love. God was more than he ever hoped or dreamed. But all he knew of God was what he was told. But as he opened the Scriptures he learned that God was not who he thought God was.
We come with our notions of who God is and what God does. But I would suggest that our vision of God is too small. We cannot limit God to human categories and understanding.
Think about Job and his friends. They thought that they had God all figured out. But in the end, God showed them that they didn’t know the first thing.
We are a prideful people. We think we have got things figured out. We think we know what we are talking about. But when it comes to God we don’t know what we don’t know.
Unfortunately, our pride makes us closed minded. We don’t listen and are not open to new understanding. Don’t put God in a box. Let him reveal himself for who he is.
Reflection
- How do you close yourself off from allowing God to reveal himself in a greater way?
- Why do you think we try to put limitations on God?
Prayer
God, you are more. More than I could ever hope or dream! You are the creator. You are a God of miracles. You are great. You are powerful. You are amazing. I thank you that you have revealed yourself through Jesus. You are so far beyond me, but you have allowed me to touch and to know the divine. Amen.
