“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, ESV)
The holiday of Thanksgiving is over. But Thanksgiving is more than a holiday. It is a habit of the heart. That is a big reason I want to talk about gratitude today. I don’t want you to let go of it now that the holiday is over.
We are talking about when things don’t go as planned – when life interrupts. We recognize that life never goes as planned. We can have the best-laid plans, but there are always going to be obstacles and challenges.
When those obstacles arise, practice gratitude. It is easy to practice gratitude when the sun is shining down on us, and everything in life seems to fall in line. But when we hit the wall it is much harder to be thankful.
When we practice gratitude, it will change our outlook. Instead of focusing on all the things we don’t have, we are reminded of all the things we have been given. Each of us has more than we ever realize. Will we take the opportunity to notice?
On Monday morning you may be down about going to work, but be thankful that you have a job.
When you are stuck in traffic, be thankful that you have a car and this amazing mode of transportation that can get you places so quickly in air-conditioned and heated comfort.
When your kids are irritating you, be thankful for they are in your life and that you have the privilege to nurture them in God’s love.
Gratitude has a way of helping us look at difficult circumstances in a new light. It will even help us see challenges as new opportunities. When life does not go as planned, practice gratitude.
Reflection
- For what are you grateful?
- How do you practice gratitude when life does not go as planned?
Prayer
Thank you Lord for this amazing life that you have given me. Thank you for this new day and the opportunities before me. Thank you for the gift of salvation. Help me always to see the blessings you pour out. Amen.
