“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”” (John 3:19–21, ESV)
At the Liberty Science Center, in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, is the Touch Tunnel. It is a tunnel that has no light. You enter into complete darkness and need to feel your way through. Though this experience you learn what it is like to be completely blind.
Darkness is an obstacle. Without light, we cannot see where we are going or what we are doing. If we don’t have light, the sight of our destination is obscured. The darkness is bondage. But the light gives us liberty.
Jesus says light has come into the world. And he is that light. But he also warns that man loved the darkness more than the light. We hide from the light. Why?
It is because light exposes and reveals. We resist allowing others to see us as we truly are. Even more, we resist seeing ourselves as we are! We always create some exaggerated version of ourselves. Who posts life as it is on Facebook? No one! We fear that others will be disappointed if they saw as we really are. Even worse, we fear they would be offended if they knew the truth about us.
The light of Jesus exposes our failures, our short-comings, and our sin. It does not feel good. He reveals that we are not what we make ourselves to be. We are more broken than we ever realize. He reveals that path of destruction that we find ourselves on. It is a difficult realization until we realize what else the light reveals.
The light also shows our way. While the light shows us we are not as great as we make ourselves to be, it shows us that Jesus is greater than we ever make him to be. It’s not just that we don’t think highly enough of Jesus. We don’t even have the ability to think highly enough of him. But the greater the light, the better we will see him for all that he is.
What areas of your life do you need to reveal and expose to the light of Jesus? How do you need Jesus to show you in a greater way who he is?
