Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. (1 Peter 1:18–19, ESV)
Blood! There is no bond that is stronger. You think about a child in a mother’s womb. There is a blood bond. You think about soldiers on the battlefield who sacrifice together. There is a blood bond. These are examples of relationships that run deeper because of the bond that is shared, written in blood.
So it is that we are ransomed with the blood of Jesus. Our reconnection with God does not happen without the blood. There was nothing less that can wash away our sin and make us whole again. Our salvation could not be purchased with money. There is not enough silver and gold in the world that could make it happen. It’s only the blood of Jesus.
At the end of your life, all the money you saved will be worthless to you. It may seem valuable today, but you can’t take it with you. It will not be able to buy you a ticket to heaven. Neither will all your righteous acts matter. Isaiah describes them as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).
The only thing that will matter is Jesus. You will have him or you will not. There will be nothing more valuable than his shed blood in your behalf. It is the price of your salvation. Take some time today to thank God for this priceless gift that came at such a cost.
Reflection
- Why is the blood of Jesus more valuable than gold or silver?
- What does it mean to you that Jesus shed his blood for you?
Prayer
Thank you Jesus for your shed blood. Thank you for your tremendous sacrifice. You price you paid cannot be counted with money. It is so much more than I ever deserve. Empower me by your Holy Spirit that I might live a life worthy of your sacrifice. Amen.
