I have a bad habit of misplacing items. It is not uncommon that I am unable to locate my keys or my wallet.
My family is well aware of my problem and recently gifted me with Apple AirTags for my birthday. AirTags are amazing little devices you can place on your key ring, in a backpack, or in a wallet. The possibilities are endless. If the item goes missing, you can bring up the “Find My” app on your phone to help you relocate the item. I have already used my AirTags multiple times to find my keys and wallet.
But physical items are not the only things that get misplaced. We easily misplace our priorities too. Unfortunately, we can’t use AirTags to relocate them.
Life gets hectic and busy. We start to prioritize the most urgent matters which are not always the most important. There are times when we grow tired and we just don’t feel like doing the things we know that we should be doing. Other times, life just becomes so overwhelming that we just don’t know how to sort it out. It happens to everyone. So how do we relocate our priorities?
When priorities get misplaced, pray! Talk with God about it. Martin Luther was quoted as saying:
I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.
Prayer offers us greater clarity to better see what is most important. Prayer works to make our day more efficient and help us fulfill what God has called us to do.
The second thing is to listen to God. And that happens by opening up his Word. Ultimately, our priorities need to be God’s priorities. And there is no better way to discover his priorities than to have him share them with you. Many of us are waiting for God to get on board with what we are doing. But if we want to live fulfilled we would do well to get on board with what God is doing.
The third thing to do is to step back. Take some time to look at the big picture. Sometimes we lack clarity because we have not taken the time to identify everything that is competing for our attention. You might consider taking a personal retreat. Go to the beach. Go to the mountains. Go to a coffee shop. The idea is to get away from your everyday.
I have developed a love for flying drones. What I think that I love so much is the perspective that it gives. It helps me to see things in a way that I have never seen before. I see familiar places in the context of all the other things that are around. It gives me a new appreciation.
We can do this with our lives too. Take a look from a different perspective. It is hard when we are in the day-to-day whirlwind to see clearly how it all fits together. We need perspective!
- Pray!
- Listen!
- Step back!
- Step away!
- Relocate your priorities!
Thank you. I needed to hear this! Lori
Thank you for these words! I needed them and as we get closer to this lenting season, I am going to actively take time to step back
