Yesterday, we talked about persistence and having a vision. Today, I want to talk about having a vision that is worth being persistent over. The basic question is: “Are you living for something that is worth living for?”
There is a joke about an airline pilot who comes over the intercom. He says, “I have good news and bad news. The bad news is we are lost. The good news is we are making great time.”
That is often the story of our lives. We are making great time, but we don’t know where we are going. We are on the fast track to nowhere.
One of the most fascinating stories in the Scriptures is the story of Jesus and Blind Bartimaeus (see Mark 10:46-51). Jesus comes to Jericho and Bartimaeus calls out to him: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Jesus responds to Bartimaeus by saying, “what do you want me to do for you?”
What? It seems obvious what Bartimaeus would want Jesus to do. Bartimaeus wants to see. He wants Jesus to heal him.
Why did Jesus ask this question? I believe that question is an important question of the heart. Jesus knew the importance of having Bartimaeus define his request. It is important for us as well.
Do you know what you want God to do for you? Many of us have not taken the time to focus on what we want God to do for us. Sure, we have basic day-to-day requests. But looking at the larger picture, do you have a larger vision of where we are going and where God is leading you? Do you know what you want God to do for you in the next year? In the next five years? In the next ten years?
If you don’t have something worth living for, then persistence is not going to be of much value. When you don’t have something worth living for, you tend to hop from one thing to another. You take the easy path of least resistance because you don’t have any reason to stick with any other path. Always going from one thing to another will leave you unsatisfied.
Most of us know goals are important. Although many of us don’t take the time to write them down. We’ve got good intentions. But good intentions rarely translate into anything worthwhile. Good intentions typically stay good intentions and nothing more.
I would like to encourage you to find some time in quiet and prayer. Define your life vision. We all have value. God has each one of us here for a reason. He knows what he is doing. Ask him to reveal to you his larger plan in your life to give you a pursuit worth pursuing. Ask him to give you a life vision. And write it down!
Then set some goals. Ask what is the next step. What is one thing you can do today to bring you one step closer to the destination? Then do it!
