Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105, ESV)
I have been attending a Pastors’ Conference the last three days in Cape Cod, MA. It has been good to be together with my fellow pastors. But I miss my family. I am looking forward to going home. It has been an intense three days, and I am looking forward to rest.
I have a five-hour drive to get home to New Jersey. It will be six hours if the traffic is bad (it probably will be). When I get in my car, I will put my phone on the dashboard, open up the Waze app on my phone, and hit the “Home” button. The app will then proceed to give me the most efficient directions home.
Along the way, there will be many turns and exit ramps. I could easily take a turn here or there. But any turn I take that does not follow the direction of the GPS will delay my arrival home. The key to arriving home in the most expeditious way to be with my family is saying yes to the direction of the GPS and saying no to all the other options.
It is an image for us on this journey called life. There are many turns we could make. There are exit ramps along the way. Reaching our destination is about saying no to the wrong turns as much as it is about saying yes to the direction of God.
Know where you are going! Know where God is leading you. It will keep you from making the wrong turns. So many of the turns we make delay us and keep us from where we are going. They don’t help us arrive at our destination and add to frustration. Think about the theme of rest; we realize that many of us are wearing ourselves out because we are taking every wrong turn that comes along.
Let God pick your destination. Fill your tank. Live on purpose!
Reflection
- Do you know where God is leading you?
- What is the filter you use to determine to know when to say “yes” and when to say “no”?
Prayer
Thank you Lord for the direction you give me in life. There are so many choices and paths for me to take. But I ask you to make clear the way you would have me go. Give me the wisdom to say no to all the rest so that I can say yes to the best. Amen.
