“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me…” (John 10:14, ESV)
Think about a celebrity that you know about.
It might be a singer. You know all their songs by heart. You have all of their albums, even the ones before they were famous. You have attended their concerts every time they are in town. You are one of their biggest fans.
It might be a famous athlete. You can list all their statistics. You know how many runs, touchdowns, goals, or points they scored. You have the autographed memorabilia in your house. You are sure to watch most every game they play.
It might be a movie star. You have seen all their movies. You have a collection on Blu-ray of all the movies they headlined. And you keep the movie posters on display in your house.
The thing is that you know all about them. But you do not know them. Maybe you met them once and shook their hand. But you never sat down with them and had a conversation. You do not know the intimate details of their lives except for what’s in the gossip in magazines.
What is more is that they do not know you. You are just one more of their adoring fans. They don’t know your name or anything about your life. Nor do they have the desire to do so.
God is different. He desires for you to know him – not just know about him. He wants you to know his love, his desires, and his voice. Furthermore, he seeks to know you. He seeks the most intimate details of your life. He seeks to know you even better than you know yourself.
God is not a far removed celebrity in the sky. He sent Jesus so that you might live relationally with him. At any moment you can call him through prayer. At any moment you can hear him speak through his Word. A celebrity can’t possibly connect with all his adoring fans. That is why they will disguise themselves and hide from the crowd. But God makes himself available to all who would seek him.
So why don’t you take some time to spend today to know God and be known by him?
Reflection
- How is God different from a celebrity you know about?
- How do you seek to know God?
- How does God make himself known to you?
