But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him. (Habakkuk 2:20, ESV)
Yesterday, I had written that we would be discussing our relationship with God and money. But after I posted about that, an unspeakable and horrifying act of violence took place in Las Vegas that I felt it important to say something. It caused me to pause as I am sure you did.
There is much that will be said about this. There is much that will be written. I wrote some words about another shooting in Orlando a while back. But sometimes there are no words. And I don’t feel compelled to say much other than to urge you to take some time for silence.
Take some time for silence for the victims. Silence for those who suffer in pain. Silence for those who have a long road to recovery. Silence for those whose lives were changed forever. Silence for those who grieve the loss of a loved one. Silence for those who aid in the process of healing and grieving.
Then there is silence before God. Silence to empty us of pride and presumption. Silence so we can hear God amid sorrow, anger, outrage, and anxiety. Silence so that we can be reminded of the things that are important. Silence so that we can hear our breath and our heartbeat (being reminded that life is a gift that has no guarantees).
Prayer
God, quiet my heart so I can hear you. Amen.
