“And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.” (Matthew 28:9, ESV)
The women ran with fear and great joy. As they ran, Jesus met them. He met them where they were. Jesus found them.
It is the story of the gospel. It started in the Bethlehem when God became flesh and made his dwelling among us. The God of heaven made his home with us on earth (see John 1:14). He is the Good Shepherd who goes to find his lost sheep (see Matthew 18:12). And now he comes to meet the women on their way. God doesn’t wait for us to come to him, he comes us.
God meets you where you are. He is seeking you this very moment. He is knocking on the door of your heart. He is seeking your life. You may be going through a time of trial and difficulty. But know that God meets you there. You may have family members who have wandered from the fold. God is chasing them as well.
The response of the women when Jesus meets them is one of humility. They take hold of his feet. They got down on the ground before him. But what joy it must have been to grasp the Savior. When they see Jesus, they are filled with such joy because Jesus met them.
It is a humbling experience to have a God who seeks us out even though we are sinners. The only response when we recognize him is one of humility and worship. He is God of the universe, but he cares enough for each of us to enter into our lives. How great is our God!
Reflection
- What does it mean to you that God meets you where you are at?
- What is your response that the God of the universe enters your life?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for seeking us and finding us. We so easily get lost and go astray. We find ourselves in a world of hurt. But you enter into our hurt world. You speak to our greatest needs and deliver us from our greatest trials. We are humbled that you, as God, would do that for us. We are so undeserving but loved. Amen.
