“Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21 (ESV)
I’ve got big dreams. There are so many things I have in my mind to accomplish. But the thing I have come to realize is that for all my best-laid plans, things do not always work out in the way that I had planned.
- Maybe you had a wonderful date night planned that turned into a conflict.
- Maybe you had an incredible retirement planned that was complicated by a health crisis.
- Maybe you had a dream for a family with children, but infertility interrupted that dream.
- Maybe you aspired to ask that girl to the prom, to find out that she was going with someone else.
Things don’t always work out has we hoped or planned. We have many a plan. Some of those plans come about. And others do not. But what our Verse of the Week this week establishes is that the purpose of the Lord will stand the test of time.
Someone once told me that there is nothing that takes God by surprise. On Good Friday, the disciples’ plans for Jesus (and for themselves) had come to an end. They never thought Jesus would end up on a cross. But the purpose of the Lord was not thwarted. Instead, his purpose was being fulfilled..
When you find yourself dissappointed, recognize God is up to something. Look to him to find a greater purpose in your failed plans. Your lowest moment, just might be that moment where God has something at work that is much bigger than you could ever imagine.
