What is the biggest problem in the church? There is no doubt there is a list of challenges that are faced. But what is arguably the biggest problem is something that is rarely talked about. It is something that lurks in the shadows. We know that sin likes to hide because that is where it is at its best.
There are some disturbing statistics in regards to middle-aged Christian men. Here are the facts:
- 77% have looked at pornography while at work in the past three months.
- 64% view pornography at least monthly.
- 18% admit to being addicted to pornography.
- 35% of married men admit to having an extramarital affair.
Disturbing! But it is not something that you often hear addressed from the pulpit.
Porn is prevalent and will become even more prevalent in the years to come. Pornography is more readily available through the internet. An estimated 35% of all internet downloads are pornographic. Intentional and unintentional exposure to porn is rapidly increasing among minors.
It may seem like something harmless. No one is hurt if you are just looking. But that is a lie. The more that porn is viewed, the more it leads to sex trafficking and the exploitation of young people. Viewing porn is detrimental to a healthy sex life. There is a link between porn and erectile dysfunction. It is no wonder we see more and more erectile dysfunction ads on TV. And the greatest harm is that it damages trust in a marriage.
If you are struggling:
- Know that you are not alone.
- Know that you are forgiven.
- Know that there is help.
Talk with your pastor. Talk with a trusted Christian friend. I wrote yesterday about finding wise counsel. The battle is real. And this is not a battle to fight alone.
