Revelation 2-3 contain the seven letters to the seven churches. The first letter is addressed to the church of Ephesus (See Revelation 2:1-7). The church in Ephesus was the most prominent church of the day. And it is commended by Jesus for the good work that it did.
But in verse 4, Jesus says, “I have this against you, that you have abandoned your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first.”
Sometimes you can do all the right things for all the wrong reasons. We can get to the point where we are simply going through the motions and doing things out of obligation. Your heart is not in it. You have lost the passion that you once had. As Jesus says, “you have abandoned the love you had at first.”
Where do you need your enthusiasm reinvigorated?
- Marriage?
- Work?
- Church?
Ultimately, you cannot discover passion and enthusiasm through willpower. Revival is the work of the Holy Spirit. Pray for God to renew your passion and fire.
The other thing that Jesus says here is to go back to the things you did at first. Remember your “why!” That is:
- “why!” you married that person
- “why!” you chose this occupation
- “why!” you serve Jesus.
As time passes it can become about getting the job done. We maintain relationships out of obligation rather than grow them out of love. We forget why we do what we do. We forget it’s about something more.
Go back and remember! Remember the care, the dedication, the attention to detail, the pursuit of excellence that you once had. Go back. Make a new start. It’s not too late.
