“But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14, ESV)

This verse (Galatians 6:14) is a call to humility. Our boasting is not to be found in ourselves. Reading through the book of Galatians, we realize that we have nothing to boast about before God. The only claim we have before God is Jesus and the cross. Other than that we are lost and have no business coming into his presence.
I am reminded of another verse. It is John 14:6 where Jesus says he is the way the, truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through him. There is no other way. There is no other name. There is no other redemption to be found. The only claim we have got is Jesus.
Tomorrow we celebrate our independence as a nation. It is a point of pride for us. As Americans we become boastful. We look for others to admire our accomplishments. Humility is not something that comes naturally to us.
As believers we recognize that everything we have is a gift from God. This includes our independence. There was certainly courage, heroism, and sacrifice that made our independence possible. But even those are gifts from God.
Instead of boasting about our independence, we give God thanks for our independence. We could have just as easily been born into slavery or under the rule of a ruthless dictator. But by the grace of God we were born into a nation where we inherited independence. Thanks be to God!
