“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8–9, ESV)
There is so much talk about the division that exists in America. But one thing that I find is that division is much more real online than it is in the real world. When we go to places like Facebook we get sucked into this vortex. It clouds our perception of reality. That is not to say the things that are discussed online are not real, but the negative can often become magnified.
Maybe it is time to unplug and disconnect from the virtual world and connect more with the real world. Turn off social media. Close your email. Shut down the phone and the computer. Leave the TV off. Then:
- Go for a walk or a run
- Put together a puzzle
- Go for a drive
- Watch the sunset (or sunrise)
- Ride a bike
- Listen to some music
- Read a book
- Start a hobby
- Practice a musical instrument
- Volunteer at church
- Visit a local tourist attraction
- Cook a special meal
- Call an old friend
- Create some art
- Start a home repair project
- Play with your kids or pets
Instead of focusing on something that is going to depress you or upset you, focus on the good things. Redeem the time. I imagine you will feel a whole lot better and you will have an increased well-being.
Reflection
- Do you find yourself distracted by online media?
- What are some things that you do to disconnect for discontent?
Prayer
Lord, set my mind on the things above. Help me to connect with the things that are real and that build me up rather than tear me down. Thank you for each moment you give me. May I live each moment to the fullest. Amen.
