“For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”” (1 Peter 2:6, ESV)
The cornerstone is the first and most important stone. It serves as the reference for all the other stones to be laid. If the cornerstone is not set properly, then none of the other stones will be. And if other stones are not set in alignment with the cornerstone, the house will come crumbling down.
Peter quotes Isaiah 28:16. It refers to Jesus. Jesus is our cornerstone. The invitation is to align our lives with this stone. If we do that, we can’t go wrong. As Peter says, “you will not be put to shame.”
When something is off in our life, it usually means that something is off in our reference to the Cornerstone which is Jesus. A drug problem is more than a drug problem; it is a God problem. An issue with anxiety is more than an anxiety issue; it is a God issue. A marriage struggle is more than a marriage struggle; it is a God struggle.
The point is that if God is not in the right place in our life, then our life will not be in the right place. The challenge is for us to recognize the real issue. Too often we spend more time treating the symptoms to our problems rather than the source. The source is our alignment with God’s ways.
If money is the problem, where is that area of your life in reference to the Cornerstone? If relationships are the problem, where is that area of your life in reference to the Cornerstone? If your health is the problem, where is that area of your life in reference to the Cornerstone?
When life is out of sorts, align with the Cornerstone! Because when we are not aligned with the Cornerstone, the house will crumble.
Reflection
- How do we align our lives with Jesus, the Cornerstone?
- Do you agree that when we are not aligned with the Cornerstone that the house will crumble?
Prayer
Jesus, you are my cornerstone. You are the one who gives me direction in life. Without you, I am left out of sorts. Give me wisdom and insight to align every area of my life with you. Help me recognize the places where I am out of alignment so that I may make the necessary corrections and experience greater strength and abundance. Amen.
