And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. (Isaiah 40:5, ESV)
God’s mission! God’s glory! These are reasons to live and to breath. As we go through Advent (and all times of the year), we serve our Lord in anticipation of his glory to be revealed.
His glory is his renown, his achievements, his beauty, his majesty, his honor, and his fame. The glory of God is not something any of us have fully seen. We may have seen glimpses. We may have been told about it. But to see it in all of its fullness is something other.
We drive around our neighborhoods this time of the year and see incredible displays of lights for the holiday. They are brilliant and beautiful. Our family will take a drive for no other purpose than to see the lights. In some ways, these are religious experiences. Our focus our attention is drawn to the glory of the lights. Everything else seems to fade away when captured by it.
How much more for the glory of God! When we are captured by his glory, the worries and cares of the world seem to fade away. He is all that matters. He is more. He is greater. He is all we need.
The glory of God is our longing. It is our peace. It is our hope. That we will dwell in the presence of that glory for eternity. Until that time, we go each day seeking to capture a glimpse through serving our God. May his full glory is revealed! Come, Lord Jesus.
The lights and the decorations of the season are ultimately a reminder of God’s glory. The lights remind us of his brilliance. The trees we put in our houses point up reminding us that God is above. The angels that we display remind us of the heavenly host that sang glory in the highest. And the nativity reminds us of the baby in whom the fullness of God’s glory was found.
Reflection
- How would you describe the glory of God?
- How do you capture a glimpse of his glory today?
Prayer
Lord, to you be glory in the highest. I look forward to the day your glory will be revealed in its fullness. May my life be lived for your glory and praise. Give me a vision that I might always live for that glory. Amen.
