Verse of the Week
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1, ESV)
Theme for the Week: Commitment
We have come to this final week of Lent known as Holy Week. It is the week we remember the final days before Jesus would be crucified on the cross. Today is Palm Sunday which commemorates Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem and points to the coming victory over sin and death.
One of the verses that often stand out for me on Palm Sunday is Luke 9:51. Here is says:
“When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.” (Luke 9:51, ESV)
The idea that Jesus set his face to Jerusalem implies that he did not look back or look to the side. He resolutely focused on the mission for which he was sent into this world. Nothing was going to stop him. Nothing was going to hold him back. He was going to follow through. He had a commitment to fulfill the will of the Father.
As we are invited to follow Jesus, we are invited to commitment. Life is filled with commitments. There are healthy commitments and unhealthy commitments. There are commitments that are worthy and other commitments that are less worthy.
- Marriage is a commitment.
- Parenthood is a commitment.
- Watching your favorite TV show each week is a commitment.
- Brushing your teeth each day is a commitment.
- Worshipping the Lord on Sunday morning is a commitment.
It is not commitment that is the problem. We all make commitments. The question is if we are committed to the right things. This week, our final week of 40 Things NOT to Give up for Lent, we will examine the theme of commitment and our commitment to the one who is most worthy of our commitment.
