The Significance of Easter Conclusion
Scripture Readings
- Acts 2:29–41
- 1 Corinthians 15:35–49
Questions
- Would you rather have one billion dollars or eternal life?
- Where are the wealthiest and most powerful people of the previous centuries?
- How does the resurrection give us hope beyond the greatest privileges of this world?
- How do you make the most of your time now while keeping an eternal perspective?
Plan of Action
- Do nothing! Yes, do nothing! Today’s plan of action is not about doing something more. It is simply to believe in Jesus who is risen from the dead. Receive the gift of eternal life made possible by the resurrection. It is a free gift given to all who put their hope in him for salvation.
- Stop striving after significance as you realize that Jesus gives you eternal significance.
Reflection
I started off this series by saying that the resurrection has significance for this present life. This is true. But how much more significant is it for life after death?
Average life expectancy for an American is 79.8 years. In the scheme of history and eternity that is not much time.
So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (ESV)
Maybe what is what is most significant about Easter is it helps us to keep this life on earth in perspective. May we not strive for significance in this world, but in the world to come (see Matthew 16:26).
In the Book of Ecclesiastes, King Solomon writes how everything is meaningless (see Ecclesiastes 1:2, 7:15). So much of what we strive for in life is like chasing the wind (see Ecclesiastes 1:14). As quickly as we come, we are gone. In the scheme of eternity, our life on this earth is insignificant.
It is only the most famous of the famous who are remembered and eventually even the most most famous fade from memory. We are even forgotten in our own families. How many generations of your family can you name? 3? 4? 5?
All that may sound depressing, but it helps us realize the resurrection makes possible for us a much more significant life than we could ever imagine. The fullness of my life is the eternal life which God created me for and that the resurrection makes possible.
We don’t need to strive for significance anymore. Jesus has already given us eternal significance. Trust in Jesus and the power of the resurrection. Jesus lives and because he lives you too may live a new and significant life. It’s not about what you will do, it is about what he has done.
