“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2, ESV)
The Wise Men were Magi. Magi were men of learning. They were ancient astronomers, philosophers, and scientists. The sought wisdom and knowledge. This quest would lead them to Jesus. Jesus is the ultimate expression of wisdom and knowledge. There is a reason the Wise Men were called wise!
When the Wise Men come to Jerusalem, they describe the star they had seen. And they express the purpose of their journey was to come and worship the one who has been born king. They knew how precious Jesus was and they were aware of what was most important.
The purpose of their journey was to worship Jesus. It is also the purpose of this journey we call life. We are created to live for the glory of God. We are given breath and life so that we might bring honor to our Lord and Savior. In other words, we were created to praise.
We have much we can learn from the Wise Men’s journey to worship Jesus. We follow their example of worship. This week, I will be looking at some lessons to learn from the Wise Men’s worship.
The first is to be a seeker. Seek wisdom. Seek knowledge. Seek Jesus with an open heart and no agenda other than to do his will. Jesus promises that when we seek, we will find. When we ask, it will be given. When we knock, the door will be opened unto us. Seek, and you will not be disappointed. Wise men and women seek him!
Reflection
- How do you seek Jesus?
- How does the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge lead you to Jesus?
Prayer
Jesus, I seek you. I hunger for you. I thirst for you. Where can I go? You alone have the words of eternal life. Give me a heart and a passion for your will and your way. Instill within me a heart of worship by your Holy Spirit. Give me a longing and a desire to live for your praise and glory. Amen.
