Yesterday, I spoke about how the kingdom is right here. But we are often too distracted to even notice. How can we better notice the presence of the kingdom?
Consider this: Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. We set this day aside to remember all the things for which we are grateful. But it is easy to lose sight of that. How do we recover gratitude? We take a day off of work. We gather with family which is one of the things we have to be most grateful for. Gratitude interrupts our routine Thursday. But it does it in a good way!
Thinking about the kingdom – it interrupts the routine! Especially if you are stuck in a rut.
Back in the day, most roads were dirt. When it would rain and the cars would drive on the roads, deep ruts would form. Signs would be posted along the way, to choose your rut carefully, because you would be in the rut for a long time. This is what happens in life. We live in our rut.
When Jesus came, he changed everything. The repetitious daily sacrifices at the temple were no longer necessary. His sacrifice on the cross was more than sufficient. The kingdom interrupted the everyday routine.
If you are stuck, don’t be afraid to take the leap. What do you have to lose? You just might get out of your rut. Maybe you need to stop something. Maybe you need to start something. Maybe you need to make a confession to release the guilt. Maybe you need to take a vacation to re-orient your life. Maybe you need to lose some friends. Maybe you need to make some new friends.
Stop! Listen to God. Seek his direction. Remember the kingdom interrupts the status quo.
Reflection
- Where do you find yourself stuck in a rut?
- What is the interruption you need in your life?
Prayer
Lord, may your kingdom interrupt my life. Give me the courage to step out of this rut I have been stuck in. Replace my fear with courage and my doubt with faith. Exchange the routine with the extraordinary. Amen.
