“And rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.” (Joel 2:13, ESV)
As I sit here and write this, I am drinking my morning cup of coffee. Actually, it is my second cup. My morning coffee is a routine. It brings comfort. It is enjoyable and satisfying. I drink it for the sheer pleasure of it.
This morning I am drinking from my Myrtle Beach mug that I bought on vacation last summer. It fondly reminds me of warm days by the ocean with my family. It makes the moment even more enjoyable.
I am always a little disappointed to drink the last sip when my coffee has run out. I often wish the moment would last a little bit longer and that there would be more coffee.
When I look at the verse above, I am reminded that God’s love is abounding. It’s not like my coffee of which there is only so much. There is more than enough of God’s love. It never runs out. It is like that ocean my coffee mug reminds me about. You can drink deeply, and it never comes to an end.
Unfortunately, we live with a scarcity mindset. We make decisions based on the fear of not having enough. We fear the coffee may run out. We fear our money may run out. We fear our health may run out. We fear our friends may run out. But the never-ending, abounding, overflowing, overwhelming love of God never runs out.
What if we stopped living in the fear of not enough and started trusting that God is more than enough? Drink long! Drink deeply!
