“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” (Matthew 6:31–32, ESV)
Last week we began to discuss four different uses of our money. The first two we shared were share and save. Today we come to the third use and that is to spend on our needs.
Jesus teaches us to pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “give us this day our daily bread.” The daily bread is all our basic needs. This includes food, clothing, shelter, and more. God gives us money to provide for these basic needs.
It is important to recognize that God is the giver. We offer our appreciation to him for providing what we need. Living in the United States, we are ever thankful because we have been given so much. There is very little reason for anyone in the United States to go without. So many of us have more than enough even when we think we don’t have enough.
Maybe you are worried today about your basic needs. We are reminded in the Scripture how God cares for us. He cares for the flowers of the field. How much more will he care for us! We don’t need to worry. That doesn’t mean we will always have a lot, but we will always have enough. It is said that you don’t realize that Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.
Reflection
- Do you worry about God’s provision for your needs?
- How do you build faith and trust that God will provide?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for giving me everything I need. Thank you for giving me my daily bread. Take away any anxiety or worry in my heart that you will not provide. Instill faith to know that in you I have all things. Amen.
