Worship is done through singing. It is done through speaking. It can also be done through writing.
One of my daily disciplines is to keep a journal. You can use a paper journal or an electronic journal. I use the Day One App for my Mac and iPhone.
The importance of keeping a journal is that it forces me to articulate my thoughts. Writing makes you think on a different level. It causes you to wrestle with your thoughts to reveal them as words. Capturing your thoughts will test them. When you keep your thoughts to yourself, there is no risk. Your stinking thinking is not challenged. At the same time, your best thoughts are kept hidden. Writing will reveal your thoughts for what they are.
I journal about the activities of my day, what I am reading, and lessons learned. I use this time to make a list of the most important things to accomplish in my day. But the most important thing I journal about is gratitude. I make a list of the things for which I am thankful. This is easy at first. I am thankful for my wife and kids. I am thankful for my home and the food on my table. But after a few days, it becomes more difficult. You don’t want to always repeat yourself over and over with the same things. I am compelled to notice the little things that often go unnoticed. It requires me to be more observant throughout the day to see God at work in ways that I might not have seen him at work.
The more I grapple with gratitude, the more my thoughts are directed towards God. I connect with him on a deeper level. I realize more and more just how worthy he is of my praise. My heart is directed towards him in a greater way. I am shown how wonderfully and fearfully I am made. I am reminded of how blessed I am. To him be the glory!
Do you keep a journal? If so, how does it help you worship God?
