When you look at the great art of history, you recognize much of it was inspired by Christianity. It is different today. Creativity is used to sell you something. Marketing and advertising have robbed us of art that points us to something greater.
There is an artist in each one of us. There is a desire to creatively express ourselves. We serve a creative God, and we are made in his image.
Do you paint? Are you a musician? Are you a photographer? Are you a dancer? Are you a poet? How can you express your love of God through your art? How can your art bring glory to God?
Yesterday, my family was stuck at home for a snow day. My son, Jacob, drew a few pictures for me on my iPad. One of the pictures he drew was of our family playing in the snow. It brought me joy that he would do such a thing for me. I imagine this is how our Heavenly Father feels when we creatively express ourselves for his glory.
The Church would do well to put renewed emphasis on the arts. In a time when visual expression is flourishing, the Church is struggling to catch up. We have the greatest message of all time to inspire us. There is nothing more beautiful to make known than our God.
If you are not sure where to start, I shared an example of a visual expression of faith last year that you might be interested in trying out. If you are an artist, feel free to share in the comments how you are using your art for the glory of God. We would love to be inspired and encouraged by you.
