Music is a powerful thing and plays an important role in our lives. When was the last time you went to church on Sunday morning and did not sing? You would never go to a wedding reception without music. What kind of celebration would that be? Imagine a Super Bowl without the halftime performance. What would a birthday party be without singing “Happy Birthday”?
We hear a certain song on the radio it will immediately transport us back into the past to a certain time and place.
We are broken hearted, and we will break out in a country song: “My girlfriend broke up with me, my dog died, and I crashed my pickup truck.”
When our team wins the championship, we might sing out: “We are the Champions, my friend!”
When you exercise, you might choose something upbeat to get your feet moving and your heart beating as you break a sweat.
You get the point! Music informs so much of what we do.
God created the gift of music for us to enjoy. He also created music as a way to bring him glory. What is the role of music in your daily worship? Does the music you listen to draw you closer to God or push you farther away? Does the music you listen to edify and encourage you? Does the music you listen to bring honor to your Savior? Does the music you listen to fit Philippians 4:8?
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8, ESV)
There are some great streaming services today such as Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon Prime Music, and Spotify. They all have ways of discovering some great new worship songs. You don’t need to abandon all other forms of music, but consider making music that honors God more prominent in your playlists.
When you listen, don’t be afraid to sing along! Even if you don’t have the music to play, consider taking some time to sing – in the car, in the shower, while you are going for a walk, or as you work. Every so often I will stop what I am doing and sing a song in worship of my Savior. Don’t be afraid to let it out!
