Yesterday, I shared about how it is important to engage in daily worship. Worship is more than a weekly event. Yes, the corporate experience is an important part of our worship. But the weekly experience will be much more fulfilling when we connect with God throughout each day. So how do I engage in daily worship? I will be sharing a few ideas over the next few days.
Setting Reminders
Our minds wander. We will lose our focus and become distracted. Our thoughts directed to the things of God. But what would happen if we set conscious reminders throughout the day to be mindful of God and to offer prayers of praise?
These reminders serve as course corrections. I become so engaged in my work or entertainment that I lose sight of my God. It doesn’t take much to turn my thoughts far from where they should be. There are many times in any given day where my heart is in a bad place, and it helps to turn back to my Creator and Savior.
You could use a smartphone to set an alarm. I have a Fitbit that I set to buzz at certain times throughout the day. No one else needs to know. It can be a silent reminder for me. If you are less technically inclined, consider putting a post-it-note on your fridge, on your bathroom mirror, and on the dash of your car. When you see the post-it-note take, offer a word of thanksgiving to God.
In the Psalms, it talks about praising God 7 times a day.
“Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous rules.” (Psalm 119:164, ESV)
We can break down 7 points throughout the day.
- waking up
- breakfast
- midmorning
- lunchtime
- mid-afternoon
- dinner
- bedtime
These are some spots where I might set those reminders. It is a starting point and you might learn later to readjust these times as you learn the times of the day where you most need the course correction.
When you encounter a reminder, you don’t need an elaborate prayer. You don’t need to get on your knees or lie prostrate. It may be as simple as stopping whatever you are doing and pausing for a moment. You may not even need to stop what you are doing at the time. Maybe you are driving in the car. Prayer is something we can do while we are engaged in other activities.
Worship comes from the heart. Setting a reminder is a heart-check to see if my heart is where it should be. Setting that reminder to center my thoughts on the one who is most worthy to think about. Sometimes those reminders come at the best time when I begin to think that everything is falling apart. When I think about God, I am reminded that he has everything under control.
What would happen if I took a few moments at each of those times every day and gave thanks and praise to God? Do you set reminders to praise God throughout your day? What has been your experience?
