“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:35, ESV)
Words to Live By
It is said that the pen is mightier than the sword. The point is that words have power. More than you realize! The words you speak and think hold authority. Your words command your life. They may command loss and despair. Or they may command joy and restoration.
So many decision we make in life are determined by emotions. In turn, our emotions are determined by the way we think. And the way we think is determined by the words we use.
The language we use plays an incredible role in shaping our destiny. If you want to change your future, change your language. We all have words that we live by. These words guide us and direct us. They provide a roadmap to the future. It’s called self-fulfilling prophecy.
Everything you say empowers something. You say, “I can’t take this.” You say, “this is is killing me.” What do those words create? They create doubt and a destructive pattern. They leave you helpless.
Instead, you say, “God can take this.” You say, “Jesus has overcome.” What do these words create? They create faith. They create optimism. They encourage you to move forward. They are the first steps towards a better day.
What Word?
Where do you get your words? Do your words come from the source of truth or do your words come from some other place? Where do we turn to find worthy words that will bring abundance into our lives?
Peter, the disciple of Jesus, had the answer. He says:
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life…” (John 6:68, ESV)
God’s Word is the first and final word. It is the source of our hope. It is God’s Word that created the universe, ushered in salvation, and brings all things to fulfillment. This is the importance of God’s Word. It is the only Word that stands eternal and is the only Word worth living by:
For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long… (Deuteronomy 32:47, ESV)
Live It and Declare It?
Our theme for the week is peace. If God’s Word is not part of your life, there is a good chance that you lack peace. It is said that a Bible that is worn out is the sign of a person who is not. The opposite is true that the Bible that is not worn out is the sign of a person who is.
When it comes to the Word: Read it! Learn it! Memorize it! Study it! Live it! Speak it!
You will not master it overnight. But the more you live with it, the more powerful of a weapon for good it becomes. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the desert, he conquered the temptation through declaring the Word (Matthew 4:1-11). If you lack peace, start declaring God’s Word over your life. Let it transform your heart and mind.
Reflection
- Examine your words. Are you speaking a blessing or a curse over your life?
- What are some negative thoughts you currently have? What is the opposite truth that God’s Word speaks? Write out the truth.
- Make a commitment to make God’s Word part of your daily life. Write down how you will do that. Will it be a Bible reading plan? A memorization challenge? Or a study?
