6 Things for Lord of Life

1. Reformation Day

Today, is Halloween. Trick or Treat! Costumes and all that good stuff. What you may not realize is that today is also Reformation Day! Reformation is not as much celebrated as Halloween, yet it is a day that holds great significance for us as Lutherans.

It was on this day in 1517 that Martin Luther posted the 95 Thesis on the Wittenberg Church Door in Germany. The 95 Theses were written as a protest and call to debate against the sale of indulgences. The idea of protest is where we get the term protestant church. The 95 Theses would spark the reformation and forever change the Church.

2. Hurricane Sandy

Our thoughts and prayer go out to everyone on the East Coast. While there is widespread devastation and loss of property, we are thankful that the loss of life was minimal in comparison to other recent disasters. If you are interested in helping support relief efforts, I want to encourage you to check out Lutheran Church Charities at lutheranchurchcharities.org. One of the great things about Lutheran Church Charities is that 100% of any donation goes exactly where they say it is going. 3. Service day

We have a work day on Saturday, Nov 3. This is an opportunity to serve our Lord of Life family and community with the love of Jesus. We have several opportunities to serve. Each activity is approximately 2-3 hours. We have a need of 28 people to be able to complete the list of jobs that need to be done. Jobs involve cleaning, yard work, and home repairs. 4. Blessings Shop

The blessing shop is open Thurs. Nov. 1 6-8 p.m., Fri. Nov. 2 9-4, Sat. Nov. 3 8-Noon. The Blessings shop is a great way to purge your closets of the items we no longer need and find some items that we would be blessed to own. Invite your friends, neighbors, and everyone else you meet! We accept: clothes, shoes, coats, toys, books, games, household items, garage/workshop items, but no furniture.

5. Daylight Savings Ends

Don’t forget to fall back this weekend. Set your clocks back an hour before going to bed on Saturday night.

What To Do Next

Oftentimes my 7 year old daughter will complain she has nothing to do. I think to myself, “It must be nice.” I have plenty to do. It’s all more than I can handle.

There have been times I have been so overwhelmed with so much to do I did not know where to start. So I did nothing. I wasted the time playing on Facebook or something else unproductive.

Maybe you find yourself there. You just do not know where to start. So what do you do when you find yourself in that situation? This is what you do:

Start with the end in mind!

When you take a vacation you start with the destination in mind. Your destination determines your direction. When you know where you are going your choices are narrowed and focused.

So the next time you find yourself stuck, don’t ask, “What should I do next?” Ask, “Where am I going?” What to do next will be much clearer.

When we are stuck it is not always about having the right answers. It is about asking the right questions.

The Key to Satisfaction

I have a confession to make. I am not satisfied. I want something more. I want something better. I want something different. I cast a jealous eye towards others that have what I don’t have.

I delight myself in many things. Just to name a few – I delight myself in the food I eat, the things I buy, the TV I watch, the sports I play, the books I read, the work I do, the praise I receive from others, and the relationships I invest in.

Yet all of these things leave me wanting. There must be something more. These things may satisfy me for a short time, but eventually I find they are not enough. I go out for a night on the town and have a wonderful meal at the nicest restaurant I could find. That meal brings me great satisfaction. My belly is full. But when the morning comes, I am hungry again. No matter how great a meal the restaurant might have served or how much I might have paid for that meal, it could not bring me lasting satisfaction.

Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you he desires of your heart.”

Dissatisfaction is not necessarily a bad thing. Dissatisfaction points us to the Lord. Dissatisfaction will cause us to seek him. When we are disappointed at all the things we thought would satisfy us that didn’t, there will come a time when we have nowhere to turn but to Jesus. Hopefully, we do this sooner rather than later.

If you are finding yourself dissatisfied, consider the following.

1) Confess your misplaced delight. Where have you put your hopes and dreams? Are they placed in things that are temporary and fleeting? Ask for forgiveness for all the things you chased after that were not of God.

2) Practice a fast. The idea of a fast is to set aside something that you delight in such as food, that you might replace that delight with something more sustaining. Fasting from food may not necessarily be the most beneficial type of fast for you. Go back and consider where you have misplaced your delight.

3) Run after the Lord. Hebrews 12:1 says, “let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Fasting from earthly delights is not meant to burden us, but to free us, so that we might run uninhibited to Jesus and to experience his joy in a greater way. The more we delight ourselves in the things of this world, the less capacity we will have to delight ourselves in Jesus. The less we delight ourselves in Jesus, the more discontent we will find ourselves being.

Something Has Got To Change!

Last week I offered some suggestions to you about what you might do when you feel stuck in a rut. It can be frustrating when you feel as if you are not going anywhere. You may realize something has got to change, but then you keep on, keep on doing the same basic things and nothing changes.

Check out last week’s list, but another suggesting I would offer is changing media diet. What are you consuming? In much the same way as the food you eat affects your health, so also the media you consume impacts your well-being. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale says, “what comes out of the mind is what you put in the mind. You must feed your mind like you feed your body.”

If you are stuck in a rut, maybe you need to consider a radical shift in what you are consuming. The season of Lent is coming up. Ash Wednesday is February 22. People will often fast during the season of Lent. But instead of fasting from food, maybe there is a certain form of media that is polluting your mind and heart from which it might be healthy for you to take a break from or to eliminate altogether. It might be what you watch on TV at night, the talk shows he listened to on the radio, time spent on Facebook, or the romance novels you read before bed.

However, remember that the ultimate purpose of giving something up for Lent is that we might fill ourselves with other healthy alternatives. Think about the newspaper you might read in the morning. It has been said that good news is no news. The stories that are often printed in the news are stories of auto-accidents, crime, corruption, sports, and weather. The purpose of the news is not always to inform but to sell ads through sensationalism. Instead, you might use this time when you would read your newspaper to read the Bible. I doubt you are going to be that much less informed by giving up your morning paper, but you will be starting your day on a much more positive note.

Speaking of ads, the general theme of most ads is that your life is missing something. In order to be fulfilled you need to purchase a certain product. Then when you do purchase that product you then see another ad that tells you your life is still not fulfilled until you buy yet this other product. Many of us fail to recognize the way modern advertising tends to discourage us and bring us down. The more we avoid the glitz of advertising, the better off we will be.

The more stuck you feel, the more radical your change may need to be. There are probably many forms of media you could give up and would not miss a thing. If you’re not quite ready to give up a certain form of media, consider keeping a log of all the different types of media that you consume throughout the day. Write down how much time you spend with each one. How much time do you spend reading the newspaper? How much time do you spend on Facebook? How much time do you spend on blogs and other websites? How much time do you spend watching TV? You just might be surprised at things you are taking in.

Another thing to consider is to whom do you give your ear? Who do you listen to? And coworkers? Family members? Friends? Even brothers and sisters in Christ? Consider the tone and the messages you receive from these people. Is it positive? Is it negative? Do they speak well or poorly of others? Are they fire starters? Is the sky always falling? Seriously consider the people you spend time with. Obviously, you can’t cut family members out of your life, but you can limit their influence. You can’t change your coworkers, but you can politely refuse to take part in a conversation.

God’s words says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8

What I want to leave you with is this thought: if you are stuck in a rut, you may need to consider radical change. It may be real hard, but the alternative may be even harder to face.

Donations for Family Still Being Accepted

To date more than one hundred donations from 16 states coast to coast have been received by LCC, combined, and used to purchase the special wheelchair, stationary chair and special iPad the Seals received just before Christmas… or forwarded dollar for dollar to Lord of Life in Elburn, Illinois so the Seals can pay some of Meagan’s medical bills and expenses.

Members of the congregation will be taking the check to the Seals later this week.

Tara, one of the LCC staff K-9 Comfort Dogs, had an exciting and memorable day visiting the Seals family and little Meagan on Tuesday. Meagan, to the amazement of her mother Luellen, reached out on her own to touch and pet Tara. This simple action brought tears to Luellen’s eyes as it is unusual for Meagan to reach out like that. Not only that but it happened again later in the visit. The whole family enjoyed the visit from Tara accompanied by LCC staffer Marie Payes. The visit ended with Meagan’s sisters, Madison and McKenzie, playing ball with Tara on the front lawn while Meagan rested in her mother’s arms.

A Miracle Moment for Meagan

This is a video from the CBS 2 News Broadcast in Chicago today. Lord of Life and Lutheran Church Charities delivered an infant wheel chair for Meagan Seals along with a chair for inside her house.

The family was originally told it would be more than 3 months before the chair would be delivered.
